There are several types of bicycles available in the market today. It can be pretty confusing if you don’t know the basic differences. So to help you pick the right one for you, here are the basic types of bicycles.
6 Basic Types of Bicycles
1. Road Bicycles.
These are fast and easy to pedal on a paved road. They are not well suited for riding off road that’s why they are called “road” bikes. Some riders find the low riding position of racing handlebars difficult to sustain comfortably, for many years. But today, there are new road bicycles with higher handlebars so riders wouldn’t have to bend over so far.
2. Mountain Bikes.
These are slower on paved roads. But with their design and flat handlebars give riders an upright position and an easy control. These bikes can easily travel on a wide range of surfaces. They have low gearing for easy climbing, fat and flat-resistant tires, disc or linear-pull brakes for excellent braking power, and front or front and rear suspension for great control and comfort. Since these bikes are usually taken to rough terrains, they are designed to be very durable and reliable.
3. Hybrids or Cross Bikes.
These bikes are almost as fast and easy to pedal as road bicycles and almost as versatile and comfortable as mountain bikes. They are excellent for errands, commutes, work outs, and recreational rides.
4. Comfort Bikes.
From the name itself, these bikes are made for comfort. They’re less efficient compared to the other types of bicycles. But sitting on one of these is very comfortable, thanks to their upright position, suspension, wide handlebars, plush seat, and an easy gearing. Also, they normally have beefier flat-resistant tires and easily accessed controls.
5. Cruisers.
Sometimes referred to as “beach cruisers,” these bikes are fun to look at. They are ideal when you just want to ride at a relaxed pace and admire the scenery, explore your neighborhood or the beach.
6. Recumbent Bikes.
These are quite comfortable and can go very fast. The seat of these bikes are usually low to allow the rider’s feet to easily reach the ground when stopping. They usually have a backrest for comfort and low step over which allows riders to get on and off the bike easily. Handlebars are easy-to-reach providing a comfortable and relaxed upright position.
Remember that with these types of bicycles, there can be sub-categories of bikes. Example, there are mountain bikes intended for jumping, and roach bikes intended for time trials and triathlons.
